Welcome

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the website of the London Buddhist Vihara. For many years the Vihara has provided a place where people can encounter the Buddha's teachings through Dhamma, meditation, religious observances, education and community activities. Our aim is that the Vihara remains a welcoming and accessible place for those who practise Buddhism, as well as for anyone wishing to learn more about the Dhamma and the Theravāda Buddhist tradition.

The Vihara is under the care of the Anagarika Dharmapala Trust in Sri Lanka, the organisation associated with the legacy of its founder, Anagārika Dharmapāla. As we celebrate the Centenary of the London Buddhist Vihara in 2026, we have an opportunity not only to honour its remarkable history but also to look towards its future.

The London Buddhist Vihara

A leading centre for Theravāda Buddhism. Founded on 24 July 1926 by Anagārika Dharmapāla, it was the first Buddhist monastery established outside Asia, and has been served by resident Dhammaduta bhikkhus from Sri Lanka ever since, apart from the war years of the 1940s.
